Your business is sleek, professional, and organized, but is your server room? Here is why your server rooms need proper cable management and tips for making it happen.
Chances are, you have professionals in and out of your server room working on IT issues, whether it’s your IT team or you bring in outside professionals. It takes a long time to wade through a sea of tangled cables to find the one they are looking for, which is costing you both time and money, especially if you are paying your tech support an hourly wage.
Whether it’s maintenance, troubleshooting, or upgrading, organizing your cabling will make your IT team’s lives so much easier.
Improved Work Safety
It’s no secret that a room full of electronics and tangled wires is not a safe environment. When your cable management is messy and tangled, you run the risk of overheating, potential fire hazards, and tripping due to loose wires (risking both bodily harm and damage to your equipment).
As a business owner, you value efficiency. If your cabling isn’t organized, you may be creating needless problems by running cables across equipment you need ready access to and connecting things that aren’t even in use. If your cables are haphazardly crossed, twisted, and tangled, it’s nearly impossible to trace a single cable when you need to.
Tips for Proper Cable Management
If you would like to save time, we recommend you give us a call to let us do all of the hard work for you, helping you to properly organize the cables in your server room.
If you’d like to tackle this yourself, here are a few tips.
Go over every single thing in the server room. Every piece of equipment, every cable, every power cord. Take stock of what you have and what you can get rid of. Record everything so that your tech team has accurate and current information available to them when they need it.
Double check that everything is working efficiently. Are there cables with fraying wires or other damage? Replace them. Are some pieces of equipment not working? Take care of it.
Come up with a way to organize the cables with different lengths and label them all appropriately, using colored ties or stickers.
Cables shouldn’t be sprawled across the room one at a time. Group them together and use velcro strips to hold them in place, away from walkways and ensuring you have access to the equipment.
Now that all of your cables are working properly, labeled appropriately, and combined to be out of the way, it’s time to clean in all of the places you probably couldn’t get to before. Compressed air is extremely helpful for cleaning your equipment. Make sure to wipe down your cables and wires, as well.
Now you are all set to go! Organizing your cables is just another way to keep your business running safely, smoothly, and efficiently.
